CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The director of “Oxyana” says the focus of his film is on prescription drug abuse, not the town that serves as the documentary’s setting.
“Oceana and Wyoming County and West Virginia, for that matter, are filled with some of the nicest, best people I’ve ever met in my life and this wasn’t a film that was meant to take any of them to task or throw anyone under the bus,” said Sean Dunne.
“This is a film about a drug issue and a drug issue that’s going on in a lot of different places and Oceana really kind of serves as a microcosm.”
Dunne talked about his film, one that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City earlier this month, on Monday’s MetroNews “Talkline.”
“It’s showing the realities of addiction and showing the face of addiction and the humanity that’s there and just leveling the playing field a little bit differently and, hopefully, adjusting our thinking about how we look at this problem in this country.
Dunne said many of the stories of drug addiction are the same.
“It’s not just an issue in Wyoming County or West Virginia. It’s a national epidemic,” said Dunne.
“Oxyana” was released online at www.oxyana.com back on July 1.
