NORMANTOWN, W.Va. — There were no injuries reported in a minor earthquake Tuesday morning in Gilmer County near Glenville.
Gilmer County 911 Director Bill Rowan said reports began coming in from residents of the Normantown area.
“We got a few phone calls of something going on and then we got a call that it was an earthquake,” he said.
The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the quake at 2.8 on the Richter Scale.
Rowan said the area where is occurred is close to a Marcellus Shale drilling site but he doesn’t know what caused the ground to shake.
“We don’t know. We honestly don’t know,” he said.
Gilmer and neighboring Braxton County have been hit by a few dozen earthquakes in recent years. All of them minor. There was a quake in Braxton County last weekend and one in Gilmer County on July 20.
