Frontier/CWA agree to extend current contract

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Frontier Communications is extending the current labor contract with the Communications Workers of America until mid-October.

Both parties announced Thursday that they’ve agreed to extend the current contract, which covers 1,600 employees in West Virginia, until October 12 while negotiations continue.

The extension comes after both sides decided they would be unable to complete negotiations for a new contract before the original expiration date of August 2 at midnight.

The contract covers former Verizon employees who became Frontier employees when Frontier Communications purchased Verizon’s landlines in West Virginia as part of a multi-state, $8.6 billion deal in 2009.

The employees, represented by the CWA, have been in negotiations on a new contract with Frontier for the past month.
