MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — No. 9 hitter Dakota Carr had two hits and drove in three runs as Morgantown Post 2 edged Faimont 5-4 to remain the lone unbeaten at the American Legion state tournament.
Albie Eddy allowed 11 hits and walked three batters yet hung on for the complete-game victory as the host team gained the inside track for its first state crown since 2007.
Fletcher DeVault ripped two doubles and knocked in a run for Fairmont (27-10), which led 3-2 in the fourth before Carr’s two-run double put Morgantown ahead for good. Jimmy Galuski followed with a sac-fly.
Earlier Thursday, South Charleston crushed Elkins 14-4 in seven innings, and Wheeling Post 1 became the first member of the six-team field to be eliminated, losing 4-2 to Romney.
Fairmont faces Elkins (26-20) on Friday at noon in an elimination game, with the survivor advancing to face Morgantown (21-15) at 7 p.m.
South Charleston (31-10) and Romney (22-14) will meet in a losers-bracket game at 3:30 p.m.
