Miner killed in eastern Kentucky accident

HOLMES MILL, KY — One miner was killed and two others hurt in an underground mine accident in eastern Kentucky Tuesday.

According to the Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing, Lenny D. Gilliam, 56, of Appalachia, VA, was killed when the side of a coal pillar reportedly burst as a continuous miner machine was operating, trapping the miners.

The accident took place around noon at Huff Creek Mine near Holmes Mill on Black Mountain in Harlan County.

The names of the two miners injured have not been released.
