NTSB releases report on South Carolina plane crash that killed Charleston man

GEORGETOWN, S.C. — Federal officials said the Charleston man killed when his plane crashed last month in South Carolina was trying to do a 360-degree roll at the time.

Those with the National Transportation Safety Board said John Prince Harris, the one-time president of West Virginia Steel Corp, was 100 to 200 feet off the ground when his plane crashed in the woods near the Georgetown County Airport.

The information was released Tuesday as part of the NTSB’s preliminary report on the July 29 crash.

The report stated that Harris was flying the two-seat decommissioned aircraft, a Folland Gnat T1, by himself when it went down at around 1:20 p.m.

Harris was on his way to visit family at the time.
