MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Eyes and feet.

Those have the attention of offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson in his continuing evaluation of West Virginia’s quarterbacks, which almost certainly will lead to a starter being named at some point, unless the rumors of Charles Sims running the Wing-T are valid.

From the contender pool of Clint Trickett, Paul Millard and Ford Childress, Dawson wants to see his quarterbacks following the proper progressions and having their feet aligned to make throws when a window becomes available. Those are true indicators of the quarterback’s thought process, something that bears closer scrutiny as the Mountaineers move from simply repping plays to undergoing game situations.

Dawson is checking to determine whether the quarterback’s eyes automatically shift to the proper spot for the designated play and whether his dropback aligns with the call. These things occur in nanoseconds after the snap, but the offensive coaches chart it all.

“We watch three different angles every play—from the side, from the back and from the defense’s back,” Dawson said. “So it’s clear where their eyes are. If your eyes are wrong it’s easy to tell.

“If we’re running the play where the ball’s got to come out right now and you’re taking a drop for a play that’s going to develop down the field, well obviously you don’t know what the hell is on going on.”

Whereas back in the spring Dawson cited Childress for holding onto the ball too long, the coach said all three quarterbacks are currently doing an adequate job of “putting the ball in play” and avoiding sacks.

Above you can can watch Dawson’s interview session from Saturday, which includes some compliments regarding the progress of Florida State transfer Trickett.

“He’s probably ahead of where a normal kid would be coming into the system,” Dawson said. “Smart kid.”

FSU fan here- Clint is a great young man, QB and leader. He had the best passing touch if all the FSU QB's. You guys got a good one in Clint. Good luck with your season.

  • Jimi Johnston

Going to be a long season if we are this close to opening day and we are having this conversation just saying

  • Cliff

Dana Holgersonhas developed QBs before, whoever he thinks is best I stand behind him besides these QBs have something Geno didn't have a very solid running game Big 12 defenses will have to give it respect and get out of the box unlike Texas Tech and K state

  • Cowboyhap

I believe Trickett will be the starting QB. I'm trying to be optimistic about the up coming season. I think the Mountaineers will be better than a lot of people are predicting. I don't believe they'll win the Big 12 but they will have a winning season, if not Holgs may not be back next season

  • Pat

I'm ready to tune out until there's a qb announced.

  • Brian

All signs point to Clint. I think he will be very impressive this season.

  • Shawn

Yea there's no way Dana is going to pick a kid just because he's a WV guy. He wants to win.

  • Chef Camille

The coaches will pick the QB that gives them the best chance t win. No hidden agenda!

  • JimJim

None of them are "Geno's" Take your pick... long season coming. And, no one outside of WV has said the defense will be any better. Long season.. drink early and often at the state's biggest beer party. Let's Go Eer's...

  • bva24

After last year's disaster Holgorsen better play the best QB, regardless of age. If Childress can't beat out Trickett then he shouldn't play.

As far as I can tell, just looking the part doesn't get you the job. Childress couldn't distance himself from Millard in the spring. That should tell you something right there.

  • Thecrow2123

Knowing WV, it will probably be Triickett due to his ties and he can play even though Childress is the better Quarterback and should be the starter.

    • Thecrow2123

If that happens don't count on Childress being here next year.

  • Nick

It will never be Millard (LOL)...Trickett has to be way better than Ford Childress to start...if it is close Ford will get the nod folks...common sense

    • Grant

After the way last year finished, Dana will start who ever gives him the best chance to win now. He'll worry about developing the QB for 2015 much later. Commen sense.

  • Brian

I think it's going to be Paul Millard. I don't really care either way. I think the coaches will choose the best person for the job. But I personally think that'll be PM for now.

  • Maxxajay

I got the feeling Trickett will be the starting Q-back come August 31....Maybe not the hole game if we are up 3 or 4 T D's...Millard will play some and Childress some....just a guess..not a wish...

    • Big Johnson

Who are we going to be up on by 3-4 TD's? Wishful thinking, hope we will
