CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Charleston businessman said Tuesday he plans to bring financial commonsense to Congress. Ron Walters, Jr. announced his candidacy for the Second District seat in both Poca and Martinsburg.
Walters, 29, said during an appearance on MetroNews Talkline his top priority is to help create jobs.
“As a small business owner, we employ West Virginians,” Walters said. “We have a bottom line and we meet a budget and I think Congress could learn some of those lessons.”
Walters’ father and brother both serve in the state legislature. Ron Walters, Sr. is a veteran delegate from Kanawha County and Chris Walters is a first term state senator from Putnam County, both are Republicans.
The soon-to-be-candidate said he can make an immediate impact in Washington by fighting the Democratic leadership and the bureaucracy.
“As soon as I get there—if we can reverse that course–that will create jobs in West Virginia,” Walters said.
More and more Republicans are talking about running for the seat that will be vacated by Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito who is running for U.S. Senate in 2014. Walters said fundraising will be a key.
“It’s going to be a very expensive race. I think we’re talking about 1-point-5 million or 2-million dollars for the entire race is probably accurate,” he said.
