State BOE gives teacher hiring policy final approval

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The new teacher hiring policy in West Virginia received final approval Thursday.

Members of the West Virginia Board of Education approved “Policy 5000: Procedures for Designated Hiring and Transfer of School Personnel” during its monthly meeting Thursday.

The updated policy gives teachers a strong voice in hiring a school teaching team.

The vote comes after a 30-day public comment period on the policy, which received nearly 400 responses. Those comments were taken into consideration and updates were made to the policy.

The policy gives schools the option of establishing a faculty senate recommendation process. Teachers on the faculty senate committee can review applicants for a position within their learning facility and then make a joint recommendation to the principal and county superintendent.

Every teacher can take a training course to become eligible to participate on the faculty senate committee. Those teachers who complete the training course and are chosen for committees will be compensated for their service.

The updated policy can be found here.
