Fall semester starts at WVU with new tobacco ban in place

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The new semester will get started Monday at West Virginia University with a new smoking ban in effect.

That ban kicked in on July 1 while many students were on summer break.  It prohibits the use of tobacco anywhere on WVU’s campus.

WVU Dean of Students Corey Farris said there has been an adjustment period.

“Policy enforcement and rules and regulations are like we enforce any other rule or regulation,” he said.  “This isn’t anything special, it’s just a change.”

In the residence halls, Farris said smoke free rules have been in effect already for awhile now.

“Our residence halls have been smoke free for years,” he said.  “Actually, we have a perimeter significantly away from all of our entrance doors.  We’ve, sort of, had a broader perimeter than some of the other areas.”

A similar campus smoking ban is also now in effect at Marshall University in Huntington where the fall semester will begin next Monday, August 26.
