Former fire chief admits to stealing

SMITHERS, W.Va. — A former chief for the Smithers Volunteer Fire Department in Fayette County will be sentenced in September for taking thousands of dollars from the department.

Timothy Whittington plead guilty to embezzlement ahead of a trial date that had been scheduled for Tuesday.  In exchange for his plea, fraud charges against his wife, Patricia, have been dropped.

Whittington, who resigned in February, took department money between July 2010 and September 2012 for his own person use.

He’ll be sentenced on September 30.
