Marshall to WOW new students

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Classes at Marshall University don’t get underway until Monday. But Wednesday night is a WOW event. That stands for Week of Welcome for the freshman.

“Students move in to the freshman dorms. Then they come to the rec center that day to get their WOW package,” explained Dan Belcher, the Facilities Operation Coordinator.

The first activity on the agenda is the ‘First Night Block Party.’

“It’s just fun. It’s to introduce the freshman, to get acclimated to the rec center and some of the activities we offer,” according to Belcher.

On tap is a giant game of musical chairs, a hip-hop class, a pizza tasting challenge, live music by DJ TGage, hoops and access to the pool and rock climbing wall.

The event gets underway at the rec center starting at 9pm and wraps up at midnight.

Belcher said it’s a great time for students, especially who are away from home for the first time, to meet their Marshall family.

“It will give students on their first night here a chance to meet people and interact,” said Belcher.

WOW continues through Sunday with events like Meet Your College Dean, a carnival, cook-out and tours of the campus.
