CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Three more states have agreed to recognize West Virginia concealed handgun permits.

State Attorney General Patrick Morrisey announced Wednesday the agreements with Alabama, Georgia and Colorado.

West Virginia recently reached an agreement with Georgia and Colorado for full reciprocity meaning those states recognize West Virginia concealed carry permits, and West Virginia recognizes similar permits issued in those states.

A new law in Alabama went into effect earlier this month that recognizes all out-of-state concealed handgun permits. West Virginia is currently working with Alabama to secure full reciprocity.

Georgia and Colorado become the 26th and 27th states to have full reciprocity agreements with the State of West Virginia.

    Great to read this!

It is a good thing that each state must decide on there own. That is what "States Rights" are all about. If the Federal Gov't can grant a right, they can also forbid a right.

Note that you likely cannot carry a concealed weapon into any private buisness (certainly those which have posted on their entrances) or homes/residences or government buildings. Nor can you carry it to any sporting events or festival-type events. If you're caught, at best an officer will tell you to put it in your car. At worst, it will be confisciated and you may be fined. And in some states like Ohio, it has to be physically on your person if you're driving in a car. Otherwise it has to be in a locked case or someplace not readily accessible.

So the legal right to carry is greatly offset by the superceding legal rights of these others to prohibit you from carrying on their premises. Don't like it? Talk to you legislators to change the law. And if you're caught, don't claim that you didn't know the law. Remember what every local/state/federal judge will say: "Ignorance of the Law is no excuse."

This is no longer true in Ohio .Ohios law was revised in sept of 2011 so ccw holders ca carry however they want to , see paragraph below taken from the Ohio attorney generals ccw training guide.

As of Sept. 30, 2011, concealed handgun licensees are no longer required to carry handguns in any particular manner in a motor vehicle. However, you should carry it safely and securely. The handgun should be carried so it is not accessible to unauthorized persons. If you are planning on carrying a concealed handgun while driving, have your concealed carry license and another piece of valid government identification in your possession.

That is great news. I have family in Florida and Georgia was always a problem while traveling there.

I think if you have a permit it should be accepted just like a drivers or marriage license in ALL states and territories.

I don't understand why each state has to give permission for you to carry a concealed weapon in there state. Before you can even carry a concealed weapon in any state you have to have a Federal back ground check performed. By rights you have been approved by the Federal Government. So why are all of these states doing what they are. The reason is MONEY. And jobs think of how many people it takes and costs per state to do this. We should not have to ask for the right to carry a concealed or open weapon. That was already granted to us.

Just like like everything else politics.

In Virginia residents go through a state background check while non-residents go through the Federal. Wisconsin approved concealed carry but only allows reciprocity for Virginia non-resident CCW holders because they went through the Federal background check. Go figure.

Like Ted Nuegent says, the second amendment is my right to carry!

      • Truth

Ummm...Ted Nugent is a nut job.

        • Wowbagger

Not really, but he plays one pretty well on and off stage.

That is great news. I travel the east coast often and it is a pain to travel through Georgia. Now if we could just get Maryland on board with us...

    • NorthernWVman

Funny I thought the same exact thing. I hate having to go through MD.

    • ShinnstonGuy

Agreed. It's a shame the states that I feel the most need to have a gun (including DC), are the ones in which I can't have one!
