Busy section of Charleston interstate briefly closed Friday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A busy section of interstate in Charleston was briefly closed Friday afternoon in both directions so repairs could be made to a power line.

All lanes in both directions on I-77/I-64 between the State Capitol/Greenbrier Street and the Capitol Street/Leon Sullivan Way exits was shut down so AEP could replace a damaged utility line over the interstate.

The work was suppose to take around 20 minutes but ended up only taking roughly five minutes.

Earlier in the day, a truck had hit a power pole near Piedmont Road next to the interstate. The pole was weakened and caused a potentially dangerous situation with the lines that ran across the interstate.

For the safety of travelers, it was decided the interstate needed to be closed briefly so the line could be repaired. The repair work took place around 3 p.m.

Piedmont Road along the interstate was still closed as of Friday evening.
