Charleston mayor upset with downtown club

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Charleston Mayor Danny Jones said Monday the city would be keeping a close eye on a downtown bar where a stabbing happened over the weekend.

Jones said the Sky Lounge has done a poor job policing itself.

“In my estimation I don’t believe it’s a safe place to be.”

Charleston police say Sebastian Williams, 26, of Charleston, was taken to a hospital Sunday after being stabbed during a big fight at the bar.

Mayor Jones said although other incidents involving Sky Lounge may have happened outside the club, the latest stabbing was definitely inside.

“This is the second time this has happened down there. This one they can’t say it didn’t happen inside. Those people need to police themselves,” the mayor said.

The Sky Lounge is licensed by the state ABCA and has a conditional use permit. Jones said the city may take steps against that permit.

“If we can we would close the place down but we are going to be watching it like a hawk,” Jones said.

Williams was in stable condition at CAMC. He told police he doesn’t know who stabbed him.
