Week 1 recap: No. 1’s all win

CLASS AAA

No. 5 Wheeling Park lived up to its MetroNews Power Ranking in week one, dominating Class AA No. 2 Keyser, 45-22.

It was No. 1 Martinsburg, though, that had to squeak out a win over H.D. Woodson (D.C.), 20-14. The Bulldogs, playing without quarterback Malique Watkins, came up with a defensive stand late in the fourth quarter, inside their own 25 yard line, as H.D. Woodson was driving for the potential game winning score.

No. 2 Morgantown rolled to a 47-7 win over Brooke, as running back Chazzy Thomas totaled 272 rushing yards and five touchdowns to lead the Mohigans behind a veteran offensive line.

Morgantown running back Chazzy Thomas rushed for 272 yards and five touchdowns against Brooke.

“We thought our offensive line would be pretty good – there’s a lot of talent there,” said head coach John Bowers. “They moved people off of the ball and there were times Chazzy wasn’t getting touched until the second level. Give them a lot of credit, and I’m sure Chazzy would be the first to do so as well.”

Another big game in AAA saw Huntington handle Hurricane, 23-8. Redskins’ quarterback Austin Hensley completed just 9 of 25 passes for 122 yards and two interceptions in the loss.

In a battle of first year head coaches with their teams, Mike Eddy and Parkersburg South knocked off Dave Tennant’s Ripley Vikings, 47-35. Parkersburg South running back Brendon Schwendeman finished with 407 yards and five touchdowns on 18 carries to lead his team back from an 11-point halftime deficit.

Winfield picked up an impressive win over Woodrow Wilson, 42-19. Generals’ quarterback Tony Show finished the game with 264 passing yards in the win.

On Thursday, it was Cabell Midland scoring 70 points in a win over Riverside. On Friday, Pt. Pleasant beat Lincoln County 70-14, while Princeton shutout Shady Spring, 69-0.

CLASS AA

No. 1 and two-time defending state champion Wayne got off to a slow start in Friday’s game against Tolsia, leading just 7-0 at halftime. Three more touchdowns in the second half gave the Pioneers a 28-0 win and 24th straight victory overall.

Bridgeport rushed for 358 yards on Friday night.

No. 3 Bridgeport handled Buckhannon-Upshur, 47-28, as the Indians tallied 358 yards on the ground. No. 4 Bluefield won its annual rivalry game over Graham (Va.) 60-38. D.J. Edwards totaled 213 combined offensive yards, while R.J. Bourne threw for 219 yards on 11 of 14 passing for the Beavers.

No. 5 Robert C. Byrd’s overall inexperience was exploited on Friday night as Fairmont Senior knocked off the Eagles, 28-7. It was the return coaching debut for Polar Bears’ head coach J.L. Abbott.

Also in Class AA – impressive win for Herbert Hoover, knocking off Scott, 40-35. The Huskies erased a 29-13 halftime deficit to pick up the win.

Westside’s Mike Mullens ran for 290 yards and scored six touchdowns on 36 carries as his team knocked off Liberty (Raleigh) 44-16.

CLASS A

No. 1 Wahama looked the part on Friday night in Mason as the White Falcons cruised to a 60-26 win over Fayetteville. The White Falcons led 33-0 at the half behind quarterback Hunter Bradley and running backs Kane Roush and Colton Neal.

“Offensively, we did a pretty good job – but we struggled a little bit defensively,” said head coach Ed Cromley. “Hunter (Bradley) is a play maker for us and Kane Roush is just as quick this year – I think we suffered a bit from people overplaying him. We’ll be looking at that to make sure we can get the ball in his hands.”

Bradley scored two touchdowns on Friday, with Roush and Neal both scoring three times apiece. Roush finished the night with 134 yards on 10 carries. Wahama will have perhaps its most difficult game of the regular season next week against conference rival Trimble (OH).

Things didn’t go as smoothly for No. 4 Magnolia on Friday as the Blue Eagles fell for the second straight year in a close contest to Linsly, 14-7. No. 5 Greenbrier West, meanwhile, edged Nicholas County, 6-0. Corey Cox scored the game’s only touchdown on a three-yard run near the end of the third quarter.

Meadow Bridge running back Jake Parker, meanwhile, put together 447 rushing yards and scored six touchdowns on Friday as the Wildcats beat Van, 56-20.
