HUNTINGTON, W.Va.– Marshall’s revamped defense made its debut Saturday night against Miami (OH) and did not disappoint. The unit that endure so much criticism in 2012 show signs it could be much better in 2013.
Marshall limited the Redhawks to just 57 plays and 239 yards of total offense. Take away two big plays for a combined 92 yards and the Redhawks struggled to move the ball against The Herd’s defense.
“It’s a good feeling. I thought the defense played with a lot of confidence. They’re playing well,” praised coach Doc Holliday.
The Herd’s defense was so stingy, after Miami converted 2 of 4 third down attempts in the first quarter, the Redhawks failed to convert on third down the rest of the game. Miami finished just 2-for-13 on third downs.
“We rolled a lot of kids in there,” noted Holliday. “We have a lot of room for improvement and have to get a lot better for next week. I think it’s a good start on both sides of the ball. I’m happy about where we are, but we have a lot of work to do between now and next weekend.”
Raheem Waiters had a 37-yard interception return for a touchdown while junior linebackers Jermaine Holmes and Neville Hewitt each had eight tackles to lead The Herd. Three of Holmes’ tackles were for loos and one was a sack.
