Greenbrier East(1-0) at Beckley (0-1)
Beckley didn’t get off to the start it wanted in 2013, falling to Winfield 42-19. The Generals racked up 515 yards of total offense, as Winfield Quarterback Toby Show completed 21 of 36 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Winfield also got some great production on the ground, as sophomore Ethan Copeland rushed 24 times for 153 yards and three scores.
Winfield was able to put points on the board on its first four possessions. For Beckley, the offense struggled to run the ball, rushing for only 64 yards in the contest. The Flying Eagles were able to move the ball through the air, however, as junior quarterback Brent Osborne was 13 for 29 passing for 200 yards and two scores – both scoring passes were to senior Chase Hancock, who finished with five catches for 129 yards. The other bright spot for the Beckley was the return-game as senior Donte Nabors took a punt 82 yards for the third score for the Flying Eagles.
This week, Beckley will open up the home portion of its schedule against rival Greenbrier East. The Spartans are coming off of a 47-22 win over Class AA James Monroe. Greenbrier East was able to rack up 559 yards of offense in that contest. On the ground, Dalton Cline led the way with 158 yards on 21 carries, while quarterback Isiah Kinder was 14 for 24 passing for 226 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for another 85 yards on seven carries.
Beckley and Greenbrier East first met on the football field in 1971 and have played every year since 1982. Beckley has a 24-15 advantage overall. Since 2000, Beckley has won 11 of the last 13 meetings, including last year’s exciting 42-34 win. This will be the 40th meeting between these two teams. Westside (1-0) at Wyoming East (1-0)
One of the best rivalries in the state gets renewed this week as the annual battle of Wyoming County will take place between Westside and Wyoming East.
For Westside, the Renegades opened up with an impressive 44-16 home win over Liberty-Raleigh. Junior running back Mike Mullins carried the load for the Renegades, rushing for 290 yards on 36 carries and six touchdowns. Sophomore Larry Cook, Jr., who started at quarterback for the injured Justin Cogar, threw for 136 yards.
Wyoming East, meanwhile, opened with a hard-fought 27-26 win over Mingo Central, stopping the Miners on a two-point conversion attempt with just over a minute left in the game. For the Warriors, quarterback Aaron Griffith was 9 of 13 passing for 120 yards and three touchdowns. It’s a great match-up between two great rivals. Westside and Wyoming East will battle Friday night at 7:30pm.
Bluefield (1-0) at Princeton (1-0)
Both Princeton and Bluefield scored at least 60 points in Week 1 victories. For Princeton, the Tigers started the season with 69-0 win over Shady Spring. A defensive score helped give Princton a 14-0 lead just three minutes into that contest. Tahj-Sho Johnson led the Tigers’ rushing attack with 147 yards on just six carries. Overall, Princeton rushed for over 300 yards as a team.
Bluefield, meanwhile, defeated longtime rival Graham 60-38 to get off to a 1-0 start. Running back D.J. Edwards rushed for 99 yards and had 114 yards receiving to lead Bluefield in the win. QB R.J. Bourne threw the ball well, going 11 of 14 for 219 yards.
Last week for Bluefield, it was the battle of the Bluefield’s. This week, it is the Battle of Mercer County, and it shapes up to be a great match-up. Bluefield and Princeton will battle Friday night at 7:30pm.
