MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Oklahoma-bound Mountaineers haven’t been three-touchdown dogs since the 2003 trip to Miami. Can the oddsmakers be as wrong about this game as they were about that one?

It’s Week 2 and, against even bigger odds, there’s a Bobby Petrino-coached team among the picks. The scabs from his Ozark mountain road rash have healed, but Petrino’s reputation as a standup guy who respects HR protocol? That will take time (or an 11-win season) to rebuild.

Alas, Week 1 kudos to Goose Gyorko, the lone undefeated panelist thanks to his Clemson pick (and thanks to the Georgia field-goal snapper’s case of the yips). Everyone else should be on threat-level midnight alert this week: The last-place guy loses his spot to Craig James.

Why not. Nobody thinks we're any good and apparently a lot of our so called fans on this website. No pressure, nothing to lose guys, throw everything at them and a little more.

WVU turns back the clock to 1982 and Paul Millard looks to the spirit of Jeff Hostetler for a shocking 37-24 WVU upset.

  • LuvDubVU

Here it is: Holgo pulls out his bag of tricks (which he hid vs W/M) - airs it out a couple of times, WV 14 OU 7; and then Sims and Dreamius get the ground game crankin. WV 21 OU 17. The D steps up in response to all the bad press, pressures OU's freshman QB, rattles him badly and get a defensive score. WV 28 OU 24. The "Stache", Nick O'Toole booms of couple of 4th quarter punts, pinning OU deep. Time runs out on the Sooners. WVU wins ! (Hey, I can dream can I?)

I support my Eers.....100%. We might lose but I'll go down with them.

  • WSC

Oklahoma 34 plus, WV 17! I hate saying that!

  • wvu4life

Get the crow ready for the metro news crew WVU 34 Oklahoma 24

  • Magic Mike

WVU better get a good defense. It has been all down hill since Jeff Casteel left.

    • WSC

Best defensive coach we have had! Jeff Casteel, what a loss.

  • WSC

I have a Mountaineer fan all my life, so don't take this wrong, but I said after last season we would be lucky to win 5 games this year! And as hopeful as I was at the start of the season, I have to still say that. I am not impressed with the D at all! And the offense is at best average! Every team has to rebuild at times and we are there. But I will still strap on my "old" blue and gold and cheer for them! Hate the changes on game coverage! I could always get 580am on my radio but guess what, I couldn't get good reception of the new stations! Had to listen online! Anyway, LETS GO MOUNTAINEERS!

  • Big Bubba

The "experts" are picking the sooners. The real mountaineer fans know how WVU likes to play the underdog role. I wouldn't count the Mountaineers out of this game. GOOOOO MOUNTAINEERS!

  • Buck

Holgs might want to consider buying the d-backs asbestos uniforms.

What everyone seems to forget was that the gameplan against William and Mary was to keep things vanilla by using only the base offense and defense. A 1-A team never gameplans against a 1-AA team. If Holgersen would have done more, it would have given Oklahoma more time to prepare for us. The W&M game was used to get our new players and starters' feet wet. I think that you will see a much different gameplan from WV Saturday night, especially on defense.

My pick wv 31 ok 27. As for marshall killing wv this year, they always have said that and it has never happened, its their favorite line. They had their chance.

I like the Mounties to beat the okies in 4o/t's

  • Earl Ray

    Smithers,
Mr. Burns would like you to stop taking his medication. Marshall will NEVER beat WVU. This is definitely a rebuilding year for us and potentially a great year for Marshall. Don't underestimate the enormous gap between our two conferences. We are finding out how superior the Big 12 really was to the Big East, which was superior to Conf USA. Even if you went undefeated in your second tier conference you would find yourself overmatched but not overlooked. You had your chance up 15 and knocking on the goal line a few years back (at your place). Then a big hit and a fumble...eventually 0-12.
