Girl Scouts get new guide

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – There’s a new top “Girl” heading up an iconic organization. Beth Casey was introduced Thursday at the Charleston Marriott as the CEO of the Black Diamond Girl Scout Council which covers 48 counties in West Virginia.

Casey knows a thing or two about those Girl Scout badges. She joined Girl Scouts when she was in second grade and kept with it all through high school. Twenty years ago she went to work with the Girl Scout organization and she’s spent the past four years as COO at the Black Diamond Council.

“This has been my dream job and it has been a job I’ve been aspiring to, I would say, for the past 10 years,” Casey said.

She’s taking over for Susan Thompson who retired earlier this summer after 20-years leading the council.

Casey was chosen during a nationwide search. She said she knows what an important and influential group the Girl Scouts are.

“I stand before you today as the professional that I am because of the training I have received from Girl Scouts,” Casey explained.

And she has the sash to prove it. It is covered with badges, pins and buttons from her time as a Girl Scout and she called it a prized possession.

Casey moves into the CEO position just two months before the scheduled opening of the Girl Zone on Charleston’s West Side. It’s an urban camp for the Black Diamond Council. It can house 24 girls and 4 adults overnight as they explore the city and explore their roles as young women.

One of the things Casey is most proud of is the fact her daughter is a fourth generation Girl Scout.
