Autopsy completed on Pleasants County hit-and-run victim

ST. MARYS, W.Va. — State police in Pleasants County said an autopsy performed Friday in Charleston on the body of an Ohio man showed injuries consistent with that man being hit by a vehicle.

Ben Gabriel, 39, was in a single-car crash late Wednesday night on Route 2 in Pleasants County near the Wood County line. His car went over a 50-foot embankment and struck a tree. Troopers believe he survived that wreck and began walking south along Route 2 when a motorist hit him and kept going.

State Police Cpl. Jennifer Price said troopers have recovered some automobile parts from the scene and they are attempting to identify them.

Gabriel’s body was found off the road near the southbound lane. Troopers believe he was walking with traffic.

Investigators are seeking the public’s help. Anyone with information is asked to call state police at 304-684-7101.
