Serial bank robber wanted by FBI in Putnam bank robbery

HURRICANE, W.Va. — The man who robbed a bank in Hurricane in July is wanted by the FBI for nine other bank robberies.   The FBI is asking for the public’s help to identify the so-called “I-55 Bandit,” who is responsible for robbing 10 banks and attempting to rob two others in five states: Illinois, Missouri, Maryland, West Virginia, and Tennessee.

The FBI St. Louis dubbed him the I-55 Bandit because all the banks robbed in the St. Louis area were along Interstate 55.

On July 30, the man walked into the Huntington Bank branch in Putnam County located at the Teays Valley exit on Interstate 64 near Route 34. Police said the man handed the teller a note demanding money and implied he was armed.

The FBI said the suspect has used the same demand note at all the robberies.

No one has been hurt in the robberies. The amounts of money taken are not being disclosed.

The suspect is described as a young man in his early to mid-20s, around 6-feet tall and thin with short brown or strawberry blond hair.

Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
