Former Weirton mayor indicted on embezzlement charges

WEIRTON, W.Va. — Former mayor Mark Harris was indicted on charges he stole more than $16,000 from the city in 2009.

Harris was indicted this week by a Hancock County grand jury on three counts of embezzlement and one count of conspiracy. His wife Nycole also was named in the indictment as a co-conspirator.

According to the indictment, Harris, 44, allegedly embezzled $16,273.22 from city coffers in July and September 2009.

Harris was mayor of Weirton for one term from 2007 to 2011, before choosing not to run for re-election.
