PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — A Parkersburg man died this weekend at Cabell-Huntington Hospital’s Burn Unit after being seriously burned when a gas can exploded on Friday night.
Investigators said Lockhart noticed the can was swelling from the heat and was trying to move it when it exploded and set fire to him. He tried to roll on the ground to extinguish the flames and ended up rolling down a hill into a heavily wooded area.
That is where emergency officials worked to put out the fire on him before using a long rope and backboard to pull him back up the hill. One report estimated Lockhart had burns on 85 percent of his body.
While that rescue was happening, police said several other people at the home started screaming and cursing at first responders and trying to interfere with their efforts.
Joseph Anthony Sams, 20, of Parkersburg was arrested and charged with obstruction before being released on bond Saturday.
