GW’s Kay AARP Scholar Athlete of the Week

CHARLESTON – Chris Kay of George Washington High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of September 22.

Patriots’ basketball/swimming standout receives statewide honor.

A senior, Chris is a 4.755 g.p.a. Honors student and AP Scholar. He has participated in the Patriot University Engineering Program and the United States Naval Academy Summer Seminar Program. He is the son of Craig and Jackie Kay of Charleston.

Kay is a two-sport athlete, competing in basketball and swimming. On the hardwood, he is a team captain and four-year member of Rick Green’s Patriots. He was a member of George Washington’s 2011 West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) Class AAA state basketball championship and 2012 state runner-up squads. In the pool, Chris has been part of three consecutive State Swimming Championship teams. He captured an individual state title in the 100 backstroke as a freshman, and was part of the 200 medley state championship relay team as a junior. He was an All-Mountain State Athletic Conference (MSAC) selection as a sophomore and junior.

On a community level, Chris is actively involved in volunteer and service activities. He has served as a coach and volunteer with Kanawha Valley youth basketball and swimming programs. He has served as a volunteer with Labor For Neighbor programs in eastern Kanawha County and Read Across America, and is a coach/instructor with South Hills Swim Club and Huntington Y Charleston Aquatic Team (HYCAT) Learn To Swim programs. He is interested in attending one of the nation’s military service academies and plans to pursue an Engineering degree.

During the 2013 fall sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State.

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement. Nomination forms may be completed online at wvmetronews.com/scholar-athlete-of-the-week or at aarp.org/wv.
