MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A couple of Oklahoma State players majoring in clichés pledged to treat this weekend’s game at West Virginia “like a business trip.”

But have these guys ever been on an actual business trip? Where you step off the plane suddenly sensing you’ve landed in a new, magical city located just beyond the jurisdiction of common sense and HR guidelines, and the next 18 hours derails into a whirlwind of pubs and piano bars and guys in your group wearing neckties around their foreheads like Rambo (So we don’t get separated, duh!), and, because you’re not just another middle-management yahoo but more like an emissary sent from two time zones away to engage in world-changing talks over shots and local craft beers, each new establishment brings a life-defining conversation with some complete stranger—like solar panel sales reps who intermittently diss Chinese manufacturers and altostratus clouds, and waitresses who aren’t drop-dead gorgeous but definitely have “a certain quality” and somehow really “get you”—and through an exhaustive night of crushingly poor decisions you probably were too wise to make as 7-year-old but now can rationalize under the hyper-tolerant philosophy of “Hey, I can expense this!”, you return to your hotel with pockets full of crumpled receipts that will read like someone else’s diary tomorrow, and just when you’re finally intent upon getting two hours of replenishing sleep before your seminar convenes, some coworker drops the double-dog Mariano Rivera dare (“Be the closer!”), at which point you suavely hand your Visa card to a lady in the hotel lounge thinking it was your extra room key …

Is OSU talking about that kind of business trip? If so, WVU has a chance.

  • WVBigb

Nice to see all the Fair Weather fans where WRONG!!

  • Ragweed

Many of you are picking the mountaineers to win. With an unknown quarterback, and the history we have, I believe you to be several degrees of magnitude overly optimistic. However, I hope you are right..

  • CoachStewart

I got moutaineer pride how bout you ???
    WVU 24 - OSU 21

    RIP Coach STEW

  • Goose

I choose not to understand sarcasm in printed mediums, so I thank all of you that called us geniuses and experts. I'm just waiting for someone to consider us all omnipotent. Then, it'll be complete.

    • tw eagle

Bow down and hail the all knowing prognosticators of the pigskin universe ...

WVU I follow, but I count on you guys, the omnipotent oracles, to guide me through the weekly morass of college football ...

      • tw eagle

        chuckle . , . chuckle . , . no ? i'll just have to try harder . . .

  • tw eagle

coach Holgerson has a good track record as an OC ... the variables in the equation of success are the players ... WVU has an adequate O line, a decent stable of runners, and recievers who "on paper" should be adequate ... the QB position , the centerpiece of any football offense, seems to have been given to a "not ready for primetime" freshman ... childress may eventually become a competent QB at some point in time BUT how many embarrassing losses must WVU endure till he matures enough to handle D1 responsibilities ... my take, coach Holgerson is saving the hall of famer some personal embarrassment this weekend and hoping that he can deliver some "numbers" against a Baylor team not known for its defense

  • Shadow

Did anyone notice that WVborn coaches are head of two of the top eight teams in this country? And RR just got a $70 million upgrade to his facilities at Arizona?

    • tw eagle

dig a little deeper Shadow and you'll find that both of these coaches are BOTBOTMR . . .

translated: born on the banks of the Monongahela River . . .guess who else
hails from this "hotbed" of West Virginia
      football ? Sam Huff and me . . .

  • Lo boy

  • ron "from morgantown"

West Virginia Mountaineers 35 Oklahoma State 34 . But that won't be the only major upset Saturday . Central Florida ( before a sell out crowd in beautiful downtown Orlando ) upsets South Carolina 20 to 18. Save the tape . Our game will go as follows , a big first half lead and then we hold off a fierce fourth Q rally to win the game and we all sing County Roads and drink Wild Turkey to celebrate .

    • tw eagle

my flask is too small to "smuggle"enough bourbon into Mountaineer Field to last a whole game - dang that no return policy ... got any recommendations ron?

      • ron "from morgantown"

Get an extra large pizza box from Casa D Amici , put flask in box , and security will assume its a pizza , and you will have the best tasting bourbon ( wild turkey) well into the 4th quarter .

        • tw eagle

thanks for the tip . Marybeth ,surprised me by sewing
pockets inside my cargo pants near the cuff . . .now all I need before
tomorrows game is a second flask .

          Goooo Mountaineeerrrsss ! ! !

  • Dave

Allan, Good call on the Virginia Tech.game.

    • Allan Taylor

Much obliged, Dave. Seen too many Georgia Tech flameouts at home the past decade to trust the Wreck to win when expected.

  • Harpers Ferry

Allan, just because you work for WVMetronews doesn't mean you have to be a WVU homer. You know, as we all do, that Oklahoma State is going to beat WVU by AT LEAST 30 points. You predict a 9 point ball game? Either you are the most optimistic person in the world or the most likely not to ruffle any feathers. For those like myself, who prefer honesty, please write from the heart. We would respect you much more for it.

    • Allan Taylor

I'm hardly a homer. Harpers, as I didn't attend the school and have no relatives living in the state. If I thought WVU was going to lose by 30, why in the world would I predict a close game?

  • David Warnick

OSU would beat WVU if the game were played underwater in the Monongahela River. WVU has little if any chance for another win this year. The couches of Sunnyside are safe.

  • Bim

OSU will not blow out WVU this weekend. The coaches will not make Holg look inept and the QB and his Dad are close friends of Holg. Saved by his connections at OSU.

  • Jase

Funny that wvu has the #1 pass defense in the big 12 this year, how's that for rankings

    • Harpers Ferry

It helps when half your games are against William and Mary and Georgia State.

    • Jase

      That's for shadow

  • Jase

Every single one of you doubters picking osu over wvu will eat crow mark my words!

    • Harpers Ferry

Please don't gamble any money on WVU. That's all I ask.

  • big tom

what really bothers me is that I think we have a very good coaching staff, not so sure about dana and deforest though

but given time, we could get good, but not for about 3 yrs.. but the wvu faithful won't let dana last that long... dana needs to question him motives for robbing players from the defense and putting them on offense.
