CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Emily Knight of Lincoln High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of September 22.
A senior, Emily is a 4.15 g.p.a. AP Honors student and ranked at the top of her class. She has served as Class President for four years, Student Body Vice President and FFA Vice President, and is an active member of Key Club, Spirit Club, School Safety Committee and the Lincoln High Newspaper staff. She is the daughter of Randy and Lisa Knight of Clarksburg.
A four-sport standout, Knight has distinguished herself as one of the most accomplished athletes in the history of Lincoln High School. She is a three-time All-State Soccer player, earning 2012 Class A/AA Midfielder of the Year honors.
Emily has put her soccer talents to work as the starting kicker for the Lincoln High School football team during the past two seasons, developing into one of the best kickers in North Central West Virginia. She is also a two-time All State selection in basketball, and earned honorable mention All-State softball honors as a junior.
On a community level, Emily is actively involved in volunteer and service activities in Harrison County. For the past three years, she has served as chairperson for Lincoln High’s annual PowderPuff Football fundraiser for breast cancer research and awareness. She is an active volunteer with the North Central West Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross, Clarksburg Mission, Camp Nabe children’s bereavement camp and St. Ann’s Catholic Church.
In 2013, she collected 800 pairs of shoes in her community for donation to the Soles for Souls organization. She is currently pursuing dual-credit undergraduate coursework at Fairmont State University, and plans to earn her biology degree before continuing her studies in optometry.
During the 2013 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State.
West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
