WVU hit and run victim remembered at bell-ringing

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Many of those who knew WVU student Joseph Dzuris gathered for a bell-ringing in his honor Friday morning on the university’s downtown campus in Morgantown.

Dzuris, 22, of Harpers Ferry, was the victim of a hit-and-run in the early morning hours of Sept. 15 as he walked across Patteson Drive near WVU’s Evansdale campus. The driver has yet to be located.

Dzuris was an engineering major and worked for the university’s student housing department.

Morgantown Police Chief Ed Preston said three detectives continue to work the case.

“They’ve got stuff they’re running down, it’s just time consuming,” Preston said.

Detectives determined the car was headed away from the Coliseum. They’ve retrieved surveillance footage from surrounding businesses hoping one of the cameras caught a glimpse of the car involved in the accident.

“When you have these kinds of things there’s a lot of forensic work that has to be done. It’s very time consuming,” Chief Preston said.

WVU’s Alpha Phi Omega fraternity held the bell-ringing ceremony on Oglebay Plaza.
