CLARKSBURG, W.Va. – Postal customers in North Central West Virginia have most likely not even noticed a difference in their mail service. It’s been three weeks since the Clarksburg Postal Distribution Center closed and operations moved to Charleston.
As of July 1 half of the work had been done. The other half was completed on September 7, earlier than the originally scheduled September 30 deadline.
Cathy Yarosky, with the U.S. Postal Service, said the USPS was able to accomplish the early consolidation through hard work and good planning.
Yarosky said 105 positions were impacted by the closure but in the end no one lost their job.
“We have managed, working very closely with human resources, to find positions for everyone’s job who was impacted who wanted a job,” according to Yarosky.
She said some workers were reassigned to other postal facilities, others decided to retire.
A slight change has been made for bulk mail customers.
“Many of our business customers drop their mail at the bulk mail entry unit and we have changed the critical entry time from 8 p.m. to 3 p.m.,” explained Yarosky. Other than that the mail is coming and going to and from homes at the same pace as before the consolidation.
Yarosky stressed just because the Postal Distribution Center is no longer at the Clarksburg facility that building is still in use.
“That building remains open,” she said. “We still have a bulk mail entry there and we still have a retail unit there.”
The closure of the Clarksburg center was announced back in December 2011. Despite attempts by the union to keep the facility open the postal service made it clear, with the changing nature of mail, it just wasn’t an option.
