Shelter-in-place lifted at Charleston plant

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A shelter-in-place was lifted at 10:11 Wednesday morning in Kanawha County following a chemical leak at the Clearon plant in South Charleston.

Kanawha County Metro 911 and emergency management said there was a release a chlorinated dry bleach at about 8:30 a.m.

A shelter-in-place alert originally was issued for the Spring Hill community of South Charleston, from the Mound west, Dunbar and North Charleston.

Founded in 1995, Clearon Corp. produces dry bleach tablets and biocides used for water treatment in swimming pools, spas and sanitizers.

An investigation into what caused the leak and how much material was released was underway.
