CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — Two suspects in the 1999 murders of two Lewis County women are back in West Virginia.

Former Plantation Inn owner David Hughes and former Lewis County resident Steve Freeman were extradited back to West Virginia Wednesday and placed in the Central Regional Jail in Flatwoods.

Hughes and Freeman are facing two counts of murder, two counts of kidnapping and two counts of burglary. A third suspect in the case, Joseph Metz, is facing the same charges.

Hughes, Freeman and Metz are accused of killing Maxine Stalnaker and her daughter, Mary G. Friend on December 1, 1999. Metz is the son of Friend and grandson of Stalnaker.

Hughes and Freeman were taken into custody on September 19 in Archibold, Ohio. Both were arrested on fugitive warrants by the Archibold City Police Department and the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department. Metz, of Lewis County, was arrested in West Virginia.

Metz has already had his initial appearance and is due for a probable cause hearing on October 11.
