Kanawha Valley Report: Week 6

CAPITAL AT HUNTINGTON

The Capital Cougars are brimming with confidence after a dramatic come from behind win in overtime last Friday night against South Charleston.

“Last year, we’d have found a way to lose that game,” said coach Jon Carpenter. “Coach (Roger) Jefferson tells me about one year they won a state championship and they won seven games in the last two minutes.”

This week, the Cougars will need to find more magic as they travel to Huntington to face the number one team in the state. Carpenter is particularly worried about Huntington’s defensive ends who he says can break up a game plan fast if not properly blocked.  Huntington has made a living this year on grinding the ball and controlling the clock. Capital will have to make every possession count for points.

GEORGE WASHINGTON AT PRINCETON

The George Washington Patriots have quietly ascended to a tie for the No. 2 spot in the SSAC rankings. GW was idle a week ago, but takes a 4-0 record to Mercer County to spar with a much improved Princeton team.

The Tigers however are in the midst of a difficult stretch and have lost three in a row.  The prospects don’t get much easier with George Washington’s hard nosed running game arriving on Friday night.

PARKERSBURG AT SOUTH CHARLESTON

Despite some impressive play, South Charleston finds itself with two losses and needing to rebound after the emtional loss to Capital. The Black Eagles welcome Parkersburg to the new facility at South Charleston High School this Friday.

The Big Reds are facing a similar situation with a 2-2 record. Parkersburg has yet to beat a West Virginia team this season with thier two wins over Ohio schools.

WINFIELD AT SPRING VALLEY

This game represents a lot to both of these teams. The Generals are 2-2 having lost to Point Pleasant last Friday, but Spring Valley is also looking for a it’s third straight victory to begin the stretch run of the season.

The game could be pivotal to both teams for post season aspirations, but moreso to Winfield with South Charleston, Hurricane, and Huntington left on the schedule.
