CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — A Morgantown club owner was sentenced to 1 year and 1 day in federal prison Thursday following an earlier guilty plea to federal tax evasion.
David Rees, 50, owed $96,554 in income taxes from Jan. 2006 to April 2007 but didn’t pay it.
Rees owned AKA Enterprises which operates the Morgantown clubs Bent Willey’s and the Vintage Room. Rees paid many of his employees and other personal expenses in cash and did not report the cash on his tax returns.
U.S. District Judge Irene Keeley handed down the 1 year and 1 day sentence along with three years of supervised release. Rees was also ordered to pay just more than $1 million in restitution.
