MARMET, W.Va. — A Riverside High School student and a recent graduate of the school were killed in a Saturday night traffic accident in Kanawha County.
The crash happened at around 10 p.m. on WV Route 61 just south of Kanawha City.
State Troopers said Mason Roush, 18, a 2013 Riverside graduate was traveling south in a Ford F-150 when he merged into the northbound lane to pass a slower vehicle. He collided head-on with a Chevy S-10 heading north driven by Riverside student, Cody Perdue, 17.
Perdue and Roush were pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in Perdue’s pickup truck, Kirsten Young, 16, also a student at Riverside, was taken to CAMC General in serious condition. Troopers said she had several broken bones and injuries to her chest, ribs, ankle, nose and arm.
Troopers were told by a witness that the vehicles were not traveling at an excessive rate of speed.
State Police at this time do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor, but both bodies have been sent to the state medical examiner in Charleston for toxicology reports.
Two other Riverside High students were killed in separate accidents earlier this year.
A candlelight vigil was held Sunday night for the latest victims. Another vigil is scheduled for Monday night at the school.
