CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Isaiah Robinson of Buffalo High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of October 20.
A senior, Isaiah is a 3.6 g.p.a. student and Promise Scholarship qualifier. He has served as a Student Council representative for four years. He is the son of David and Michelle Robinson of Red House.
In both his academic and athletic pursuits, Robinson has excelled at the Putnam County school. A three-sport standout, Isaiah is a three-time state track champion as part of Buffalo’s 4×800 relay team; setting a Class AA-A state meet record during the WV Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) state track championships in May 2013.
He is a past WVSSAC state track championship individual qualifier in the 400 and 800 meter runs. As a junior, he helped lead Buffalo’s boys’ basketball team to a 2013 WVSSAC state tournament berth; the school’s first boys’ state tournament appearance since 2008. Isaiah is also a team captain for Coach Mike Sawyers’ Bison football team.
On a community level, Isaiah is actively involved in volunteer and service activities. He mentors youth as a coach and volunteer with Buffalo’s Biddy Basketball and midget league football programs. Isaiah serves as a volunteer with Special Olympics West Virginia and local food pantry programs in Putnam County.
He is an annual participant in the West Virginia Legislature’s Page program, and serves as a peer volunteer with elementary and middle school activities in Putnam County Schools.
His future aspirations are to earn his college degree in communications and continue his track career on the collegiate level.
During the 2013 fall sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State.
West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
