Pedestrian hit while helping trucker dies

 

RANDOLPH COUNTY, W.Va. — A man who was hit while helping a stranded truck driver has died as a result of his injuries.

Robert Thompson Jr., 54, of Wintersville, Ohio, passed away Sunday evening, according to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies said Thompson was helping to fuel up a tractor trailer on Route 50 eastbound when he was hit by a Chevy Cavalier. He was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital, but later died from his injuries.

The vehicle that hit Thompson was driven by James Gerlach. Deputies said Gerlach has been charged with DUI causing injury.
