Former WVU standout among Mavs’ roster cuts

DALLAS — Former West Virginia forward Devin Ebanks is seeking to hook on with another NBA team after being released by Dallas.

The Mavericks on Tuesday waived four players, including Ebanks, who had signed a non-guaranteed contract that would have been worth $884,293 had he made the opening-day roster.

Ebanks received a two-game suspension by the NBA last week after pleading no-contest to a DUI arrest in Hollywood in November 2012. When and if another team signs him, Ebanks must sit out the first two regular-season games.

The NBA regular season opens next week.

After being drafted by the Lakers in 2010, Ebanks spent three seasons in Los Angeles. The 23-year-old has averaged 3.6 points and 1.9 rebounds in 63 regular-season games. His playoff totals include six starts in nine appearances, averaging 4.1 points and 2.2 rebounds.

Viewed as a long shot to stick with the Mavericks, Ebanks was waived along with former Syracuse center Fab Melo and forwards Renaldo Balkman and D.J. Kennedy.

In 69 games covering two seasons at West Virginia, Ebanks averaged 11.2 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists and played a key role in the Mountaineers reaching the 2010 Final Four.
