Raleigh mother takes plea bargain in son’s death

BECKLEY, W.Va. — A Raleigh County woman pleaded guilty Friday to one count of felony child neglect following the death of her son earlier this year.

Brandy Smallwood, 28, left her 2-year-old twin sons with her new husband James Green on Feb. 8 while she went to pay a drug debt. Prosecutors said before she got home one of the sons was dead, the other severely injured. They had been beaten by Green.

Green has pleaded guilty to the death. He’ll be sentenced in Jan. Smallwood, who was also originally charged with murder, faces 2 to 13 years in prison after her plea bargain with prosecutors.

The couple had gotten married earlier on the day of the incident. Prosecutors said they sold a car for $2,000 and spent the money on oxycodone.
