CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — A Harrison County grandmother has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of her 11-year-old grandson.

Tina Owens, 57, of Jarvisville was emotional during Thursday’s plea hearing in Clarksburg.

William Andrew Owens died June 30 after Tina Owens fired multiple shots from a .40-caliber handgun in the dark at suspected intruders.

Police said one bullet pierced the wall of the boy’s bedroom 200 yards away and struck him in the chest as he lay in bed.

Owens told a judge Thursday she had no idea one of the bullets went into her grandson.

The boy had just finished the fifth grade at Salem Elementary School.

Jarvis will be sentenced Dec. 12. She faces up to a year in jail on the misdemeanor conviction.

What happened to all the yahoo eye for an eye justice? This woman should be shot in the chest with a .40 handgun! Hypocrites...

  • Glad I don't live there

So who was the real intruder. Does she now think "was it really worth it"

  • jag

The most stupid thing a woman living by herself could do is go outside in the dark "looking for intruders". The 2nd time around as well. She could have called her son living 200 yds away, called 911. What a shame that she only faces one year for a misdemeanor. Since when is murder a misdemeanor? She has killed somebody, not smacked them on the wrist. Lets all go outside when we we hear a noise & start shooting

  • Darren

You people are arrogant and crazy. This was and is a tragic accident. This woman was trying to protect herself. In the moment, she was likely frightened, and if awoken from sleep, not clear minded. She likely never had the time to determine all risks. If u want to blame someone, find the intruders that initiated this chain of events.

    • Debra

I respectfully disagree. If this would have been a non family member who was killed in the next home over, we would not be discussing this. She would surely be suffering the consequences of a poor decision. And by the way, it is my understanding that this was not the first time she shot her gun without knowing what she was shooting at.

    • Bigfish

Firing your gun wildly in the dark is not protecting yourself it is pure negligence and I think she had done this before. She needs to do time as a lesson to others.

  • Debra

I for one have been promoting all along that she should serve some time for this. The Joe Biden move for scaring possible intruders is ludicrous and not safety protocol. A year is probably good.

  • lee arthur

She must pay the price for her stupidity and unintelligent handling of a fire arm.

    • mauldawg

The you must pay the price for being unintelligent.

  • Not really sure

Is there a better write up on this story else where? Was the child in her home? Where exactly was she standing while pulling the trigger? I am a firm believer of having the right to defend our homes and lives from danger, and I couldn't imagine what was going through her mind at the time. However, I am also a firm believer that any person possessing a firearm should have the knowledge and ability to use it safely and appropriately. Target practice is a must!!!

    • very sad

According to WBOY, the grandmother's grandson was in a separate home located next door to her (approximately 200 feet away). One of her bullets entered into the side of that home and into the grandson's bedroom which ultimately struck him in the chest while he slept.

It was a horrible, tragic accident, and I feel for the grandmother and all family members. However, I truly feel that this accident could have been completely avoided with just simple gun safety common sense. So awful!

  • J.P.

This woman heard noises and started shooting. How stupid can you be? Yes, it is horrible that her grandson was killed, but she is to blame for that. This wasn't an accident. She made a decision to go outside and shoot at the noises she was hearing. She could have shot into the ground in front of her if she was just firing warning shots. Her intent was to cause harm to someone, and she accomplished that. She killed an innocent child, and has caused unnecessary heartache to her family.

  • Jo

"In the dark at suspected intruders" Yes, she should do time and longer for such reckless behavior. Where are you 4 rules of gun safely. This isn't the wild west at least know what your discharging your weapon at.

  • eduardo

Wow--way to throw the book at her and really discourage this kind of reckless behavior in the future

    • TC

Good Lord man! Where is your compassion? The article says that the boy was 200 yards away! She is scarred for life emotionally and as a grandparent myself I can not even dare to imagine what she is going through.

      • jfk

allot of folks these days only has compassion when its their family or their self!

      • Morgantown

Compassion? Where was her COMMON SENSE??? She should go to jail for much longer than that! What kind of idiot just starts firing a gun into the dark, let alone towards a house???? It doesn't matter if the boy was 2 miles away. She fired a gun with NO REGARD for safety!!!
