Portion of national forest closed for helicopter logging

ELKINS, W.Va. — A portion of the Monongahela National Forest will be off limits to sportsmen and other members of the general public for an extended period of time.

The U.S. Forest Service and West Virginia Division of Natural Resources announced the closure of the area comes amid safety concerns over a helicopter logging operation getting underway. The closure started November 1 on the Friel Laurel Timber Sale. The sale is the last timber sale on the Upper Williams Environmental Assessment.

Boundaries for the closure are State Route 150, Little Laurel Creek, Williams River, and Forest Service Road 115B, and the northern National Forest boundary north of Edray. Williams River Road and Forest Road 86 will remain open during the time of the logging.

Those who have questions can call the U.S. Forest Service Marlinton Ranger District Office at 304-799-4334.
