Jury continues deliberations in trial of McDowell mayor murder

WELCH, W.Va. —Jury deliberations will continue Wednesday in the murder trial of the woman who allegedly killed War Mayor Tom Hatcher.

Jury deliberations in the case will resume at 9 a.m. Wednesday after the jury was unable to reach a verdict after deliberating most of Tuesday.

Deliberations began after both sides in the case rested Monday afternoon.

Becky Hatcher, Hatcher’s daughter-in-law, took the stand in her own defense Monday afternoon and told the jury she was at her mother’s home at the time of the murder. She said when she heard of Hatcher’s death she went to his home but was told to leave.

The defense rested its case after Hatcher’s testimony. The prosecution rested its case on Friday.

Becky Hatcher

Becky Hatcher and her brother, 27-year-old Earl Click of Grundy, Va., allegedly killed Mayor Hatcher in his home on July 17, 2012. They allegedly stole $1,100 from the mayor to buy drugs.

The prosecution’s final witness was Becky Hatcher’s uncle. Roy “Uncle Donnie” Harding testified his niece had asked him 2 or 3 times to kill the mayor but he refused.

But Becky Hatcher’s mother and 13-year-old sister testified for the defense Friday that Becky was at her home at the time of the murder.

Click is scheduled to go on trial in late-January.
