WV Medal of Honor recipient among those featured in new stamp series

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Medal of Honor recipient Hershel “Woody” Williams is among 12 Medal of Honor winners from World War II whose photograph will be seen in a new memorial stamp series issued by the U.S. Postal Service.

The Postal Service is issuing the “Medal of Honor” Forever stamps as a way to recognize the living while still paying respect to all 464 Medal of Honor recipients.

The stamps are set to go on sale Veterans Day. A First-Day-of-Issue dedication ceremony for the stamps is scheduled for Monday at 9 a.m. at the National World War II Memorial.

At the time of design, there was only 12 of the World War II Medal of Honor recipients still living. Three of the 12 men depicted on the stamps have since died.

Williams, 90, of Ona, earned his Medal of Honor for actions taken in the hard-fought battle of Iwo Jima in 1945.
