Marlinton fire rekindles

MARLINTON, W.Va. — Firefighters in Pocahontas County spent Monday back at the scene of a Sunday fire in downtown Marlinton after the flames there rekindled.

“There’s a lot of smoke coming out of the corner building, which is the old Bank of Marlinton building, it’s now known as the McKay Building,” reported Cara Rose with the Pocahontas County Convention and Visitors Bureau on Monday morning.

The rekindle came more than 24 hours after the flames were first reported at 3 a.m. Sunday.  The fire spread to several buildings and eventually destroyed most of entire block in Marlinton.

Reports indicated 12 people were displaced from apartments in the buildings that burned and several businesses were also damaged.

“A variety store, where they had lots of craft items and products like that, also a coffee shop, an insurance office, and H&R Block office, several state offices were inside the buildings as well, so lots of office space,” said Rose of the businesses involved.

“It’s a very stressful time here in town.”

No one was hurt in the fire Sunday, but a firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion.

A dozen fire crews, representing every fire department in Pocahontas County, responded to the Sunday blaze along with firefighters from parts of Greenbrier County and Randolph County.

As of Monday afternoon, investigators had not yet determined the cause of the blaze.
