Kanawha man pleads guilty to murder

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Kanawha County man will be sentenced in January for shooting and killing one of his friends in Rand earlier this year.

Tremale Leon Straughter, 29, of Rand, plead guilty to first degree murder Monday in Kanawha County Circuit Court for killing Donovan “Don Don” Taylor, 29, also of Rand, early on the morning of Feb. 8.

Monday was supposed to be the first day of Straughter’s trial.

Taylor’s body was found in a vehicle on Emory Avenue.

Investigators said Straughter shot Taylor, who was described as a friend, several times before leaving the scene and then returning to repeatedly shoot him again.

In exchange for his plea Monday, Kanawha County prosecutors agreed to drop separate wanton endangerment charges and offer no recommendation during sentencing.

Straughter could be sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison on Jan. 10.
