Medical marijuana issue back before lawmakers

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — State lawmakers will continue the discussion today on the medical marijuana issue in a meeting scheduled to begin at noon at the state capitol.

The legislature’s interim committee on health is set to meet in the House of Delegates Chamber.

“Marijuana has proven medical benefits, and seriously ill individuals should be able to use it without fear of arrest and prosecution,” Marijuana Policy Project legislative analyst Matt Simon said in a prepared release. “We are pleased to see legislators are educating themselves on the issue, and we hope they will move forward with this compassionate and much-needed legislation.”

Simon said 20 states and Washington, D.C. have already legalized medical marijuana.
