State unemployment rates steady throughout September and October

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state unemployment rate has remained the same throughout September and October.

West Virginia’s seasonally adjusted rate remained at 6.2 percent in September and October.

The number of state residents without a job fell 100 in September to 49,400 but climbed up 200 to 49,600 in October.

Total non-farm payroll employment increased 3,000 in September, with gains of 3,300 in the service-providing
sector and a loss of 300 in the goods-producing sector.

Trade, transportation, and utilities had the highest gain in September with 1,500 jobs and mining and logging lost the most jobs at 600.

In October, total non-farm payroll employment climbed 800, with gains of 900 in the goods-producing sector offsetting a loss of 100 in the service-providing sector.

Construction had the highest increase in October with 1,400 jobs and trade, transportation, and utilities had the highest number of jobs lost with 1,000.

The national unemployment rate decreased one-tenth of a percentage point to 7.2 in September, and returned to 7.3 percent in October.
