Double shooting under investigation in Fairplain

FAIRPLAIN, W.Va. – One of two men injured in a shooting early Friday morning is now facing charges in the incident.

It happened around 4 a.m. in Jackson County.

“It appears a parking lot in front of the I-77 Motor Inn in Fairplain is where the incident occurred,” according to Jackson County Sheriff Tony Boggs.

Thaabit Bashir, 23, of Columbus, Ohio, is charged with two counts of attempted murder and malicious wounding.

Police said Bashir and Brandon Barnette of Greenup, Ky. got into an apparent dispute over drugs in the empty parking lot. While struggling inside a truck, Bashir was shot in the leg, according to police, and then got out of the vehicle and fired several shots into the truck, hitting Barnette.

Bashir walked into Love’s Truck Stop about 100 yards away from where the shooting happened looking for help. He was covered in blood. Police were called in and a search ensued.

Immediately following the shooting, the truck, carrying Barnette and a Logan County man took off down Interstate 77. A few minutes later, the men were pulled over in Kanawha County near the I-77/I-64 split in Charleston.

Barnette had been shot multiple times. The other man was injured. He was questioned by Charleston Police.

Boggs does not believe either man’s injuries are life threatening.
Bashir is expected to be arraigned once he is released from the hospital.

The sheriff says his investigators with the help of Charleston Police are still trying to piece together exactly what happened. The sheriff isn’t sure if others were involved in the incident. They’re looking into that now.

“I don’t have any information right now that would indicate this is anything more than an isolated incident.”

We’ll have the latest details on this shooting as it becomes available.
