Undefeated Rams aiming to go from ‘good to great’

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — Undefeated Shepherd University will host Winston-Salem State in Jefferson County this weekend for Round Two of the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Winston-Salem State is coming off a win over Slippery Rock.  Shepherd had a bye week in Round One.

Head Coach Monte Cater said the team’s motto, throughout the year, has been “good to great” and that is something they’ll take into the playoffs.

“Good to great was to take a team that we thought was going to be pretty good and see if we couldn’t go ahead and make it much better and we’ve taken those steps, so far, although we do have a huge challenge on Saturday,” said Cater.

Cater is this year’s Mountain East Conference Coach of the Year.  It’s the third time he has lead the Rams to an undefeated season and the eighth NCAA Division II postseason appearance for Shepherd.  Nineteen of Cater’s players have already earned MEC All-Conference honors.

The Rams of Shepherd will meet the Rams of Winston-Salem State at 12 p.m. Saturday at Ram Stadium.

The winner of the game will host the winner of the game between West Chester and Bloomsburg on Dec. 7.

Saturday will be a big football day in the Eastern Panhandle.  Martinsburg will be hosting Capital at 1:30 p.m. in the SemiFinal Round of the High School Football Playoffs.
