Red Cross tips for preventing a holiday disaster

CROSS LANES, W.Va. – There will be a lot of cooking going on over the next couple of days. The American Red Cross wants to make sure you’re staying safe while preparing that food.

Erica Mani, the Regional CEO of the Red Cross in Cross Lanes, said the stove and oven are prime places for fires to begin.

“Kitchen fires are the most common cause of home fires,” stressed Mani.

In fact, two out of five home fires start in the kitchen. The Red Cross has some tips on staying safe this holiday.

“Make sure you keep your children at least three feet away from the oven and the stove. Make sure you have an implement to put over top of your pan, in case a fire should start,” said Mani. “Just using common sense in the kitchen to make sure you can prevent a devastating home fire this Thanksgiving holiday.”

There’s also concerns about candles at the holidays as well as space heaters. You need to have a fire extinguisher close by.

“It’s all about being with your family and friends and making sure you do it in a safe way,” explained Mani.

If a tragedy does happen this holiday, help is available.

“If something does occur, the Red Cross will be there,” stressed Mani.

If you need some extra safety tips, the Red Cross has you covered. You can download a free, first aid app from the I-Tunes store.
