HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — A running back for Marshall University will most likely not play in the Conference USA Championship Game this coming weekend.
Kevin Grooms, 21, was suspended from the team indefinitely following his Saturday arrest in Huntington on misdemeanor domestic battery and obstruction charges which came after some kind of fight at his apartment.
Huntington Police arrested Grooms early Saturday, the day after the Thundering Herd clinched the C-USA East Division Championship with a 59-28 win over East Carolina at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington.
“We are aware of the situation and are handling it appropriately and internally,” said Jason Corriher, Marshall athletics spokesperson, in a statement.
In April, Grooms was arrested on misdemeanor charges of obstruction and underage consumption.
Last year, he was named the Conference USA “Freshman of the Year.”
Marshall (9-3) is expected to face Rice (9-3), the C-USA West Division Champion, at 12 p.m. Saturday. The location of the game, which will be televised on ESPN2, was scheduled to be released late Sunday night following the determination of the BCS rankings.
Rice beat Tulane 17-13 Saturday to advance to the championship game.
